How AIDS denialism spreads in Russia through online social networks

Three important factors for participation in AIDS denialist networks were determined: inadequate counselling, denial of the diagnosis because informants “felt good” and unwillingness to follow antiretroviral treatment. To our surprise, we found that the two most-known and hotly debated AIDS denial rhetorical strategies – that HIV science is fake and that it is a product of a global conspiracy – played almost no role in converting individuals to AIDS denialism.

Mariëtte Botes: ARV pioneer who became the victim of abuse and hostility

Dr Mariëtte Botes, who has died in Pretoria at the age of 50, was an early pioneer of antiretroviral cocktails that saved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people with Aids. But, reports The Times, while running a clinical trial at Kalafong Hospital in Pretoria in 1999, she became the target of a hostile campaign by Patricia de Lille, who was then an MP for the PAC, who accused her of abusing and exploiting her patients.

Fake news claims that Walmart bananas have HIV virus are fruitless

"HIV virus detected in Walmart bananas after 10 year old boy contracts the virus," reads the headline on a post we first saw on Feb. 6, 2017, from a website called CNNews3.com. Facebook users flagged the story as part of the social media platform’s efforts to stamp out fabricated news stories.

Reuters–along with many other news sites–parrots erroneous news release on HIV testing via USB stick

This Reuters story draws readers in with news that scientists have developed a quick HIV test on a USB stick, which could be useful in the developing world. The story confuses the effectiveness of the traditional, test tube-based method with that of the experimental USB stick test that researchers hope will replace it, ultimately overstating the latter’s sensitivity. The reason this happened is because it seems to be based entirely on a news release, which also seems to misunderstand the study’s design.
